Never release USDT to a buyer before confirming the payment has arrived in your mobile wallet. Not the SMS notification — the actual balance increase. SMS notifications can be faked. Always check your MTN MoMo balance directly. This single rule protects you from the most common P2P scam in Uganda.
What is Binance P2P?
P2P stands for peer-to-peer. Instead of buying crypto directly from Binance (which would require a bank card that most Ugandans don't have), P2P connects you with other people who want to sell crypto for Ugandan shillings. You pay them via MTN Mobile Money; they release the crypto to you through Binance's escrow system.
Binance holds the seller's crypto in escrow during every transaction. This means the seller cannot take your money and disappear — Binance physically holds the crypto until both parties confirm the trade is complete. This escrow system is the reason P2P is safe when you follow the rules. It is not safe when you ignore them.
How to Buy USDT on Binance P2P — Step by Step
-
Open Binance → Trade → P2P Trading
On mobile: tap the three-bar menu or the Trade tab at the bottom. Select "P2P Trading." If you don't see it, tap the search icon and type P2P. -
Select Buy → Choose USDT
USDT (Tether) is the recommended crypto to buy in Uganda. It stays at $1 and is accepted everywhere. If you want Bitcoin directly, select BTC — but USDT is better for beginners. -
Filter by payment method: MTN Mobile Money Uganda
Tap the filter icon → Payment Method → scroll to find "MTN Mobile Money Uganda" or "Airtel Money Uganda." This shows only merchants who accept your payment method. -
Choose a reliable merchant
Look for merchants with: (a) 100+ completed orders, (b) 98% or higher completion rate, (c) green "Online" status. Avoid brand-new accounts with under 10 trades regardless of how good the price looks. -
Enter your amount and place the order
Enter the UGX amount you want to spend. Binance shows you exactly how much USDT you'll receive. Tap "Buy USDT" → Confirm. The merchant's mobile money number and name appears in the chat. -
Send the MTN payment
On your phone, dial *165*3# or use the MTN MoMo app. Send the exact UGX amount to the merchant's number shown in Binance. Take a screenshot of the confirmation. -
Click "Payment Sent" in Binance
ONLY click this after the money has left your wallet. This notifies the merchant and starts the release timer. The merchant typically releases USDT within 1–5 minutes of confirming receipt. -
USDT arrives in your Binance wallet
Check your Spot Wallet → USDT balance. The funds are now yours. If the merchant doesn't release within 15 minutes, use the Binance "Appeal" button to escalate to Binance support.
How to Sell USDT on Binance P2P (Convert Back to Shillings)
- Go to P2P Trading → Select Sell
- Choose USDT → Filter for MTN Mobile Money Uganda
- Select a buyer with 100+ trades and 98%+ completion rate
- Enter the amount of USDT you want to sell → Confirm
- Binance locks your USDT in escrow immediately — you cannot lose it at this stage
- Wait for the buyer to send you MTN payment
- Check your MTN wallet balance — not just the SMS — and confirm the money arrived
- Once confirmed, click "Release USDT" in Binance
- An SMS saying payment was sent (SMS can be faked)
- A screenshot from the buyer (screenshots can be edited)
- The buyer saying "I sent it, check again later"
- Feeling pressured because the buyer is being aggressive
Only release when your MTN MoMo balance has increased by the correct amount.

P2P Exchange Rates — Are You Getting a Good Deal?
P2P rates are always slightly worse than the official USD/UGX exchange rate because merchants add a small margin (usually 1–3%) for their service. This is normal and expected — it's the cost of converting mobile money to crypto without a bank account or card.
To check if a P2P rate is reasonable: look up the current USD/UGX rate on Google ("1 dollar to ugandan shilling"), then compare to what the P2P merchants are offering. If merchants are offering more than 5% above the official rate, shop around — there are always other merchants. If one merchant is offering a rate suspiciously lower than everyone else, be cautious — that's a common setup for scams where they'll invent a reason the trade can't complete after you've sent money.

Common Binance P2P Problems in Uganda (and Solutions)
Problem: Merchant not responding after I placed order
Wait 10 minutes. If no response, the trade will auto-cancel and any locked funds return to you. Do not send MTN payment if the merchant hasn't confirmed they're ready. Use the Binance chat inside the app to message them first.
Problem: I clicked "Payment Sent" before I actually sent the money
This is a serious mistake. Send the payment immediately — you have 15–30 minutes before the trade auto-cancels. If you miss the window, contact Binance support before the cancellation and explain. Do not press this button until money has left your wallet in future.
Problem: Merchant says they didn't receive my MTN payment
Show them the MTN transaction confirmation code (you receive this by SMS or in the MoMo app). If they continue to claim non-receipt, file an appeal in Binance. Binance's dispute team will review MTN transaction logs. If your payment was genuine, you will receive your USDT. Never cancel the trade based on a merchant's request — this is a known scam tactic.
Problem: The P2P rate seems much higher than the official exchange rate
This is normal during high-demand periods or when fewer merchants are online (late night in Uganda). Try again in a few hours, or look at merchants offering larger order sizes who tend to have more competitive rates.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Binance P2P is fully available in Uganda and supports MTN Mobile Money and Airtel Money as payment methods. Hundreds of active merchants list UGX trades daily. Uganda is one of the most active P2P markets in East Africa.
Each merchant sets their own minimum. Typically UGX 20,000–50,000 (approximately $5–$15) for MTN trades. Some merchants set higher minimums of UGX 100,000+ for larger order sizes. Look at the merchant's listing before placing an order to see their minimum.
Binance itself charges 0% fee on P2P trades. The cost comes from the merchant's spread — the difference between the P2P rate and the official exchange rate. This spread is typically 1–3% for reputable merchants. There are no hidden fees from Binance.
For buying: 5–15 minutes total. You send MTN payment (1–2 min), merchant confirms receipt (1–5 min), USDT releases instantly. For selling: similar timing. Trades can take longer if the merchant is slow to respond or if there's a dispute — the Binance timer gives merchants 15–30 minutes to release before a dispute can be filed.
